Kyoto Palace
Kyoto Palace
Above the breezeway at the Kyoto Palace there is a motif of clouds that are created by a brush stroke technique that makes the clouds appear to fade around the edges. I spotted this while traveling with my wife in Japan. This is an abstracted version of that technique distilled into a repeat pattern and printed outside Oaxaca, MX, on craft cotton produced in Mitla, MX.
The inks are made from natural pigments foraged or bought in Oaxaca, MX. In this case, cochineal, brazilwood, indigo and huisache beans were used. These pigments were added to a water based textile ink. The print is made up of nine 6 inch square prints that have been tiled to achieve the full image. The color blocks were created from hand cut stencils and the black painted pattern was achieved using a resist and photo emulsion.
Signed on the back. No hanging hardware provided, but will hang nicely off a single screw. Should not require an anchor as the piece is very light.
